At the end of the series between England and India, England will officially be ranked as the number one test cricket nation in the world. Rejoice! I’ve been watching England play cricket since the 1980s and trophies have been rather thin on the ground. In fact being an England cricket supporter has been some sort of masochistic trial for most of that time, plucking defeat from the jaws of victory on a number of occasions. Or just being consistently rubbish between the odd sniff of unfulfilled glory.

The leader of the Sisters of Mercy is Andrew Eldritch. He is a very intelligent man. But one thing he is wrong about is being irked about his band being described as “goth.” In fact there has never been a band that has been more goth. Back in the day, the Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees were also labelled as goths for their gloomy, isn’t-it-all-so-terrible tunes. But both would chuck out the odd catchy thing like The Lovecats or Christine which was the reverse of that perception. The Sisters would never go into that zone, they were Goth Max. Only Bauhaus were of a similar gothness and they were pretty humourless and sometimes forgot to write tunes. But there’s no reason to worry about being pigeonholed with a certain label. Labels are important for food products if you fear the effect of peanuts, or for bottles of bleach for instructing the stupid not to drink it or use it as eyewash. There is no reason to live in fear of a black planet. Not when it’s so entertaining.

Doctor Who returns shortly in the second half of this year’s series. The episode has the excellent title of Let’s Kill Hitler and here’s the prequel to it...
Wikipedia has it being broadcast on 27 August in the US. The BBC haven’t mentioned when it will air yet. It’s also got to be the 27th for Blightly, hasn’t it?

With the rioting in the UK, the commentary on the rioting in the UK, the rioters themselves in the UK and the response to the rioting in the UK, the following may be useful when you’re absorbing information on this subject (rioting in the UK). This cut out and keep guide can also be applied to other circumstances, like the entire internet.

If you have been here before you will know that I can blather on about a number of things regardless as to whether I know much about them or not. Sometimes I pretend to be less knowledgeable about things for effect, whilst on other occasions I genuinely haven’t got a clue. There is one thing I do know about though and that is the music of Queen. Or more accurately I should say I did know everything anyone could conceivably know (in the pre-internet world) about the music of Queen.
